  • Catalogue Essay

    - A story in history that is no longer foreign to many, the birth of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak with its ties to Gérald Genta in 1972 was a game-changer in the industry. Brilliantly engineered with the iconic octagon bezel and integrated bracelet from the first “jumbo” reference 5402, the Royal Oak family has since grown into a colony of its own.

    - In 1994, Audemar Piguet broke boundaries amongst the Royal Oak family with the launch of the ref. 14800, the first from the series to feature a smaller case size of 36mm diameter and a leather strap.

    - Extruding a different appeal, the reference celebrates a new curved case design that comes in various metals including stainless steel, gold and two-tone examples like the present timepiece.

    - The present two-tone ref. 14800SA in stainless steel and yellow gold features a golden tappisserie dial with matching gold date wheel. Its preservation of the timepiece is truly exceptional. Boasting razor sharp edges and a yellow gold bezel that has developed a charming warm patina, this is a “new-old-stock” gem that should not be missed.

    - Accompanied by its certificate and accessories, this unusual and quirky Royal Oak is a splendid choice for those seeking for an alternative that still embodies strong DNA from the brand. Please note that the proceeds of the sale of the present watch will be given by the Consignor to various charities.

    Audemars Piguet

    Swiss • 1881

A specialist in the manufacture of complications since it was established in 1881, Audemars Piguet never ceases to impress with a rich history of creating bold, even audacious, timepieces underpinned by traditional watchmaking at its finest. This Le Brassus-based Swiss manufacturer is one of only two major manufacturers still owned by the founding family. Since its earliest days, AP is considered a leader in the field of minute repeaters and grande complication pocket and wristwatches. The brand is devoted to preserving the history of watchmaking in the Vallée de Joux, showcased at their superb museum in Le Brassus.

Today, the brand is best known for its Royal Oak models, a revolutionary luxury sports watch launched in 1972. Other key models include early minute repeating wristwatches, vintage chronograph wristwatches, such as the oversized reference 5020, perpetual calendar watches and the Royal Oak Offshore, first introduced in 1993.
